…. I'll try and keep this short. This will be a brief explanation to those who fear change; it is only conjecture and my opinion, so it's cool if you disagree. I would also like to note that this isn't a pro sailing rally, but I will be using it as an example for ease. Many people are afraid to vote in major updates (most recently sailing) due to what appears to be several reasons, some of which are: Not wanting to fundamentally change the game Fear that Jagex will screw it up Not wanting to devalue other content/make dead content All 3 of these may seem legitimate at first, but when you consider the reality of what will happen as a result, they can all be rationalised as illegitimate reasons (if such things exists) to vote no to something. Firstly, the fundamentals of this game, compared to others like it, involve not only skilling, questing, and pvming, but also the movement system, chatting, trading, and the graphics. In rs3, further fundamentals have been added/changed. The graphics have been completely revamped, from the way you walk to the way the trees look. From an unbiased point of view, most would say they look better than old school, but it is the association we had to this game as youngsters that brought us to old school and its graphics, I would think. The addition of microtransactions has also changed the fundamentals of rs3, forcing players to spend irl money to get things in game. Heck, this concept could also be argued towards old school bonds, which altered the fundamentals of the game, but were voted in. Similarly, the grand exchange changed the fundamentals of trading, but also voted in. Sailing, and other major updates, would not change the fundamentals like the above examples have, so it is not a valid reason to vote no. Being afraid of Jagex cocking up is totally understandable. Splashing? Nmz? Everyones pissed about that one way or the other. However, one thing we can always rely on Jagex to do, is bring in something that feels old school. Every single update that wasn't taken directly from rs3 (grand exchange for example) completely feels old school. From a bosses drop table, to the graphical design, to the lame dad jokes that Mat K or Ash probably put in; they're all in line with what currently exists in the game from which they started from as a base back in February 2013. While some things may be overpowered, these are the scary details, and are similar to bugs appearing in game. They're unintended features that just cannot be helped. It happens with every single games developer ever ever, and is something we should aim to not fear. The core ideas and concepts that Jagex request to bring out is pure old school magic, every time, it's just the small details that sometimes cause upsets. People want to revive dead content. Dead content is caused by other superior content outshining it, whether it's money making, xp rates, combat bonuses, or lack of them. Counter intuitively, the way to revive dead content is to bring out new content, but a specific type of content. Having a new outright best in slot item would devalue the previous best in slot item, and could potentially make stuff before that dead content (see powercreep). The good sort of new content is completely new stuff. Stuff not tied to other stuff by some sort of tiering system. I hate to use it again, but a prime example would be sailing. It's a skill that incooperates other skills passively, meaning that potentially some dead content from the other skills would get revived in this skill, while not changing the typical standard/best xp or gp rates in said skill. The key thing to note is that if Jagex were to straight up give buffs to certain things (for example, buff the xp from thieving elves) then other related things would then slip down, possibly into dead content (for example pyramid plunder would lose popularity). The only true way to revive dead content is with more, completely unrelated and new content. Once again, this is purely what I think, based on what I've seen. If you think that the content suggested on a poll would be actively detrimental to the games economy, fundamentals, playerbase, or otherwise, then I encourage you to vote no to the content. I wish that instead of people voting no because they fear to vote yes, I wish that people vote no because they believe in voting no. tl:dr - Vote no because you actively think the content will be detrimental to the game, not because you fear to vote yes because of what could be.
